Google Sheets function
IFS function in Google Sheets
IFS in Google Sheets evaluates several conditions in order and returns the value paired with the first condition that is TRUE. Use it for grade bands, status levels, or other multi-option rules. If every supplied condition is FALSE, IFS returns an #N/A error.

Syntax
=IFS(condition1, value1, [condition2, value2, ...])Arguments
| Argument | Required | What it means |
|---|---|---|
condition1 | Yes | The first condition to evaluate. |
value1 | Yes | The value returned when condition1 is TRUE. |
condition2, value2, ... | No | Additional condition and value pairs, checked in order. |
Examples
Assign a grade band
| A | B | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Student | Score |
| 2 | Ava | 84 |
=IFS(B2>=90,"A",B2>=80,"B",B2>=70,"C")Result: B
The first test is false, and the second test is true, so IFS returns B.
Common mistakes
Putting a broad condition before a narrower one.
Order conditions from the most selective threshold to the least selective threshold.
Leaving no condition that catches unmatched values.
Add a final condition such as TRUE with a fallback value when every row needs a result.
